6 Tips for a More Organized Garage

  Tuesday, Jun 14, 2022

Don't be the guy who can't park in their garage because it is packed with boxes, tools, and out-of-date clothing. A garage is where you should park your vehicle, manage your supplies, and store bulky equipment. It shouldn't be a garbage dump. Now is the perfect time to start taking back that space.

Here are 6 tips for a more organized garage.

1. Storage Towers
A lot of people have stacked bins, and gear lying on the floor. This is really a poor use of vertical space, so we should start by adding storage towers. Plastic bins can be very helpful for storing sports gear, apparel, or toys. They are easy to stack on top of each other, but this can make it difficult to reach the bottom boxes. Install storage towers can be customized to fit each box perfectly on its own shelf for easy access. And on the sides, you can place narrow tools or supplies for extra organization.

2. Wire Shelving
So, we've taken care of the bulky bins in your garage, now we can install some wire shelving. Adding wire shelving gives you a clear view and easy access to your items, while taking up minimal space. You can organize things by need and dedicate a space for each member of the family.

3. Corner Shelving
Corners are often very under-utilized in garages, which is why it can be smart to add some corner shelving. You'll find you can find a surprising amount of items on a corner shelf, while it stays conveniently out of the way.

4. Dealing with Tools
Okay, now let's talk tools. First, we have the option of buying a tool chest. These are really nicely designed. For those with a ton of tools, these can be essentials.

Otherwise, if a tool chest is too bulky, you can hang up your tools on your walls. For shovels, try hammering two nails in close proximity to each other on the wall.

Place your shovel face down so that the widest part sits atop the nails. For some tools you could even add a magnetic strip to your garage wall and place magnetic attachments on the handles of your tools. You can also hang items on the wall using hooks. You can screw hooks right into the wall of your garage, but if you want fewer drill holes, you could make use of a pegboard.

5. Pegboards
Pegboards can be customized to your liking to fit tools like wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers, saws, levels, pliers, drills, wiring, and so much more.

6. High Cabinets
You won't always need immediate access to all your items. Some things will be best stored out of sight until the time or season they are needed. This is where installing high cabinets can be helpful.

Just like with storage towers, high cabinets allow us to make use of vertical space. Certain chemicals can be dangerous, especially for curious children who don't know any better.

Storing them high helps keep your things organized and keeps your kids safe.
